Typical routing

  • Drum gating: Control of unwanted grandfather / room noise in drums
    • Connect four channels of drums (kick, snare, tom 1, tom 2) to the XR2400 inputs
    • Set the THRESHOLD for each channel so that the gate opens only when hit
    • Set the RATIO to ∞:1 for a full gate (or lower for fine compilation)
    • Set ATTACK (in case of a weak start) and RELEASE (so that the signal returns smoothly)
    • Connect the outputs back to the mixer or audio interface
  • Mastering gate control: Elimination of noise in the quiet passages of the mastered track
    • Input: left/right channel of the mastered mix
    • Link stereo channels using STEREO LINK for unified control
    • Set a very high THRESHOLD (almost silent)
    • ATTACK: very short (< 1 ms), RELEASE: long (200-500 ms)
    • Outputs to master bus / analogue monitoring chain
  • De-esser emulation: Suppression of sibilance in talking/singing (using sidechain)
    • Input: stereo vocal signal (L/R)
    • Sidechain INPUT: signal with EQ (high-pass on sibilants~6-10 kHz; high level)
    • Set THRESHOLD so that it gates only sibilants
    • RATIO: 2:1 (gentle) or higher for greater reduction
    • Output: de-sessed vocal
Connection instructions: The examples below show typical signal flows in practice. For specific details (jitter, buffering), see section above.
