My way 1975-2026
This timeline is not a list of processors or a list of software versions. It's my personal path from tape tape, first attempts with electronics and analog satellite image over osmoids, Amigo, video, music, internet, business and programming to distributed computing, own applications and today's interconnected development ecosystem.
Sound, electronics and the need to know how things work
The tech didn't start with a computer for me. At first, there was sound, mechanics, electricity, curiosity.
Start of personal axis
I was born in Czechoslovakia. This page starts right here because later technical projects were not created in vacuum - they follow the long need to analyze, understand and reassemble things in their own way.
Sonet B-3 and the first experiments with sound
I tried the Sonet B-3 tape on the tape recorder, the speed change, and other simple hits. I didn't use terms like time- stretch, reverse or modulation at the time - I just wondered why the same sound suddenly sounded completely different.
Gramophone and self-study
I had my own record player and I read a lot at the same time. Once I could read and write, I was attracted to physics, to science, to mathematics, to geography and to history. I wasn't just talking about the school stuff; I was wondering what was behind it.
First amplifiers and home electronics
I started building simple amplifiers, looking for different signal sources and trying out components that were handy. The electronics for me was not a finished product, but a kit. I'm still in this relationship with technology.
First contact with computers
Through friends and people around me, I first encountered the Commodore 64 and Atari 800XL. The computer suddenly combined several things that I had already enjoyed in particular: logic, image, sound and the possibility of creating something.
From analogue satellite TV and cassette recorders to a system built for creative work
In the early '90s, my computers, music, and painting were connected simultaneously. It was not one hobby - more like a few technical worlds, which gradually began to come together.
Analog satellite, Astra and own video archive
I had my own analog satellite reception at home by the time 1990. It was definitely not a common thing in my neighborhood. I started at the Astra 1A at the time; after the launch of Astra 1B in 1991, the offer for position 19.2 ° E continued to expand. Music television meant a whole new source of both image and sound: I watched MTV and MCM and, after its launch in 1993, VIVA. I was hunting video clips from the broadcast and building my own archive.
First I recorded them on a mono video recorder GoldStar imported from Germany. There was no video camera on the Internet or the "play again" button. When I wanted a specific video, I had to capture it the moment the station actually broadcast it.
Didaktik Gama ’87, 80 kB and cassette storage
At Christmas 1987, I received my first computer of my own: a black Didaktik Gama ’87 with 80 kB RAM and a cassette recorder.
RAMTOP set above 32768, a paging bug could overwrite part of the code after switching memory banks and crash the system. Technical description of the 87/88 models ↗ · Spectrumpedia ↗It is hard to explain that part of the computer work was listening to the sound of a cassette and sometimes very practical work with a screwdriver when setting the head.
Black ZX Spectrum 128K +2A
Because of the limitations of the Didaktik Gama ’87, I moved to a black ZX Spectrum 128K +2A with a built-in datacorder and AY sound chip around the turn of 1989 and 1990. My unit was already purchased outside the Tuzex retail system. Programming and sound began to meet in one machine.
Political science, history and international law
I began studying political science, history and international law much more systematically, prompted in part by the Gulf War and the rapidly changing world after 1989.
Amiga 600
After the eight-bits, Amiga 600 came. Discos, Workbench, graphics and sound meant a huge jump. I started doing tracker music, and I gradually discovered that the computer wasn't just a gaming device for me, it was a universal tool.
Stereo video, home cinema and clips as a source of samples
I later replaced the Mono GoldStar with a Panasonic stereo with editing functions - I'm not sure about the exact model after years, I have a memory of something like the NV-650. Later I bought a stereo Mitsubishi and used Aiwa's pro logic routine at home. Just watching music TV has gradually become a small home audio-video workplace.
The video archive wasn't just a collection to watch. I also used the sound from TV and video as a material for the amiga samples. For me, two things were connected: music television supplied source material and Amiga made it something of its own.
Military service and Sensible Soccer at the barracks
I went to military service. Computers and Amiga didn't disappear from life there either - we held tournaments at the company Sensible Soccer. Besides everything that was military, there was this much more pleasant memory: a bunch of people, Amiga, and matches that could be more important than any real league round.
After I returned, I continued to expand the Amiga routine, storage sites and mechanics.
First "big" disk and CD-ROM
I operated on A600 even then a large IDE / PATA disk and later CD-ROM. I have long connected 10GB drive for about 10,000 CZK with too early a year from memory; period data show that the 10 gigabyte IDE drives belong to the end of 90. flight. That's why I'm leaving the season here purposely wider.
Amiga 1200 Tower, first PC, burning and expensive internet
I haven't lived in Amiga or PC mode in a few years. I had both worlds next to me, and everyone did something better.
Amiga 1200 in Infinitiv Tower II
I switched to Amigo 1200, which I gradually got to Infinitiv Tower II. The set has grown by 68040 to 40 MHz, 32 MB Fast RAM, FastATA and large drives. I started with A1200 with AmigaOS 3.1 and later I bought AmigaOS 3.5.
FastATA + MakeCD: the Amiga as a CD-burning workstation
I used FastATA and MakeCD on Amiga. I burned music CDs for the tower and Disman and data disks. The burner cost approximately 10,000 crowns, as well as some of the great discs at the time. If the writing fails today, I delete the file and try again. Back then, the buffer underrun meant another shiny saucer for money.
First PC next to Amiga
I started using the PC around 1998. One of the first major machines was older Pentium III 500 MHz. The disk capacity was later changed and increased in it, so I do not want to link later 160-250GB drives directly to the year of acquisition of the machine. Operating systems went gradually through Windows 98, Windows Millennium and Windows XP; I also used Windows XP Media Center in parallel.
Four ISDN lines in one life
I had two ISDN lines at home and two more at the firm. I was working on the internet on Amiga and on the company PC when the connection was not a self-evident day service for one flat rate. It worked - and it also was very convincing to appear in a phone account.
Duron, Athlon XP and GeForce 4 MX
The PC has gradually become the main gaming and working machine. Through Duron I got to Athlon XP; I remember graphics as GeForce 4 MX with 64 MB. At the company, another Athlon ran with a large disk and own ISDN connection.
SETI
I joined SETI @ home. The idea that a home computer can do a small part of a real scientific calculation in its spare time caught me and never let me go. Years later, much deeper work on BOINC and its own tools grew out of it.
The end of my first Amiga era
Amiga 1200 Tower remained active until approximately 2005. The PC has taken over most of the daily work, but Amiga was not a one-time nostalgic episode - I have been using it for more than a decade since the first entry into the Amiga world.
Capacity, programming and return of calculations as a hobby and tools
PC has become a dominant platform, but my use has not changed much: expand, tune, measure and build my own tools.
2 × 320 GB PATA
I bought a pair of 320GB drives into the gaming and work PC, still on wide PATA cables. Suddenly, there were hundreds of gigabytes of music, video, games and working data at home - a capacity that would seem absurd to me at the time of Didaktik.
2 × 1,5 TB SATA
A switch to SATA and a pair of 1,5TB drives came in. In the personal history of storage sites, it was the moment when the "large disk" definitely became terabyte space.
C#, C++ and Python
The programming gradually shifted from individual utilities and experiments to more systematic tools. Next to C / C + + I used C # and more Python, which later became one of the main languages of my desktop ecosystem.
More powerful assemblies, GPU and BOINC
I have gone through several powerful AMD assemblies - from FX-6100 to the eight-core series FX to FX-8350 - and combined them with powerful Radeons. The performance was no longer about games for me; more and more were given calculations, experiments and long-term tasks.
Czech National Team
I officially joined the Czech National Team. Distributed computing, which began SETI @ home in 2001, thus gave it a team dimension and longer-term continuity.
From system tuning to my own software ecosystem
I was getting less and less into adapting to a foreign workflow. I prefer to write a tool for the problem I was dealing with.
Web, Windows tools and first more systematic AI experiments
I ran my own website, published technical and analytical materials, and I was building tools for Windows. At the same time, I was more interested in algorithms called AI - without the generative layer of today.
Opteron server and large local storage
The server set with AMD Oteron, dozens of disc terabytes and gradually more powerful GPU has moved home infrastructure towards what I consider today as my own computing laboratory.
Ryzen and another jump in performance
Ryzen 7 1800X, 64 GB RAM and a combination of powerful GPU have already allowed you to do things at home that used to belong to workstations or servers.
Amiga 500 returns to the collection
After years, I got an Amiga 500. It wasn't a full return to active use, it was more of a reconnection to the platform that shaped me.
Linked local ecosystem, AI as a tool and return to roots
In recent years, individual interests - software, databases, audio, hardware, distributed computing, research and web - have begun to connect to one system.
Designing my own digital ecosystem
I started to unify the different utilities and projects more: common principles, local data, own GUI frameworks, documentation, backups and tools that can work together without the need for a cloud.
Ryzen, RTX 3090 and AI in daily workflow
The powerful Ryzen sets, dozens of terabytes of local storage and RTX 3090 have enabled me to move the work with audio, analysis and AI. Generative AI I did not begin to see as a substitute for my own work, but as another tool - like the former assembler, tracker, database or FFmpeg.
Return to Amiga - this time with PiStorm
Amiga 500 from 2020 went through the garage and recap and got a Pistorm. With AmigaOS 3.2 and ROM 3.2.3, a special circle was closed: I returned to the childhood machine with technology that links the original Amiga to today's hardware.
A server cluster and BOINC as a development focus
Distributing computing was no longer just about giving up computer time. I started actively developing my own tools around BOINC, Benchmarking, Customer Management and Experimental Workflow.
BazookaWEB and project consolidation
Software, BOINC / DCBench, database projects, audio / MIDI tools, games, web publications and custom development utilities are today created by a linked portfolio. BazookaWEB is its public class - a place where I put together not only finished programs, but also history, articles, music and things that I have long been interested in.
The lines that keep coming back to me
What's in it for me?
Technology has changed almost beyond recognition in 50 years. The power, capacity, price and way we get to the information has changed. But my basic approach remains similar: when I'm interested in something, I want to know how it works; when the tool is not enough, I try to modify it or create my own; and when new technology comes along, I'm most interested in what it really can do.
And yes - looking back, it still amuses the fact that the road to today's local cluster and dozens of terabytes was guided by a cassette player and screwdriver, an analog satellite, VHS tapes full of video clips, expensive CD-R and four ISDN lines that could make their existence known to them in a way that was effective.
Technical Context
The axis is a personal memory. I only use these links where they help plant hardware in the right time and do not confuse the memory with the exact date of introduction.
