How the application works and what it is for
Overview
CapityScout QT is a modern analytical tool designed for quick identification of "data eaters" on local and network storage sites. Unlike standard system tools, it offers advanced visualization by means of QtCharts and exportable reports in JSON and CSV format.
Visualisation
Application uses module for dynamic display of disk status:
- Pie Charts: Percentage distribution of file categories (Video, Audio, System, etc.).
- Bar Graphs: Historical development of the filling of drives (when logging is enabled).
- Treemap (Experimental): Hierarchical display of folders by size.
Analytical logic
The application core uses a multi-thread scanner (), which allows millions of files to be searched without blocking the user interface. The scanner shall support:
- Filtration: Option to ignore system folders or specific extension.
- Checksumming: Optional check duplicate over MD5 / SHA-256 (v0.1.0.8 +).
- Real-time States: Instant free space recalculating during deleting files directly from UI.
Extended profile
CapacityScout QT is a monitor of disk capacity and directory locations that does not only show an immediate status, but stores measurements to SQLite and creates a long-term trend. It is intended for workstations, servers and storage sites where it is important to know not only how much space is left, but also how fast capacity changes.
Tracked locations and periodic measurements
The user adds a disk or folder, names it and assigns the color. Poll timer then records total / used / free values in the set interval. The interval can be set from detailed monitoring to long-term hourly sampling depending on whether the priority is fast reaction or lower data volume.
SQLite History
Location and measurement are stored in the database. This allows you to compare today's status with last week, month or longer period and get data for your own SQL / Python analysis. The application is calculated with a long-term monitoring scenario over months and years.
Graphes and delta visualization
QtCharts displays capacity development in several modes - collectively, shared or separately by disk. The DivergingDeltaBar itself highlights the change around zero: the increase in free space and the loss is visually differentiated. Time period and visibility of individual locations can be switched.
Use scenarios
CapacityScout is applicable to one system disk, comparison of several drives, search for storage that is filled the fastest, and long-term server monitoring. Historical data can be used for simple capacity forestation and for estimating when storage will need to be expanded or cleaned.
Integration and automation
The database layer is open for custom scripts. The documentation describes the use via Python, regular run through Linux cron or Windows Scheduler and subsequent reporting. The tool can function as a graphical interface monitor and as a data source for further automation.
