How the application works and what it is for
Overview
VMS (Voynich MIDI Sequencer) is not a common linear sequencer. It works with the concept of "shards" which consist of complex structures based on weighted random selection and game algorithms.
Extended profile
Voynich MIDI Sequencer QT is a modular sequencer and a patterne generator within the VMS ecosystem. Qt branch follows the older Tk version, but moves the editor, playback and the management of the patterns into a more modern architecture and prepares clearer integration points for other generators and MIDI tools.
Pattern editor and sequencing
The basic work object is the model. The user works with tracks and steps, modifies rhythmic and melodic events and can combine manual editing with algorithmic generation. The sequencer solves the pace, length, MIDI notes, velocities and timing and sends events to the selected MIDI device during playback.
Generators, combining and humanisation
README describes several layers of generation: the randomizer creates new patterns according to specified parameters, the combinator consists of existing material and the humanizer changes timing / dynamics so that the result is not mechanically regular. These algorithms are not closed monolith - architecture envisages adding its own modules.
MIDI playback and device
The Qt version contains a separate layer for selecting MIDI devices and playback. He works with standard MIDI channels, music, velocities, the Change and Control Change program. This allows the same model to be sent to a software synthesizer, virtual MIDI port or external hardware.
Persistence and compatibility
The levels and settings are stored separately from the UI. The project solves compatibility during migration from the Tk version and has an explicit upgrade path so that older patterns are not automatically lost when switching to Qt. Settings scheme has validation and default for recovery in error.
Integration with MusicTeam and other modules
VMS is counting on the sequencer to be connected to MusicTeam, AudioDB / Player and other tools. MusicTeam can deliver a harmonious or a plattern base, VMS modifies / generates it and playback layer plays it. The design includes custom generator extension points and connection to external synth engine.
Development and diagnostic layer
Documentation includes troubleshooting, edge cases, performance / scaling limits, latency benchmark and recommendations for smooth playback. This reflects the nature of the project: it is not just a simple step sequencer, but a long-term extended experimental MIDI framework.
Current branch 0.1.6.x
The 0.1.6 series expands VMS from the local model / sequence editor to a more general MIDI center. Besides the standard MIDI IN / OUT, it works with routing between applications and computers and experimented with network MIDI / OSC connection. VMS can work with Wave Generator Synth and other tools through system or virtual MIDI endpoints; with the availability of modern Windows MIDI Services remains the classic mido / pyhonertmidi fallback.
The purpose of VMS is not only to play the finished MIDI file: it is an environment for folding the patterns, generating sequences, editing them, routing them and live connections with other sound generators.
