What the project solves
Legacy Tk monolith MIDI sequencer. Pattern editor, MIDI playback, generators. Reference version.
How the application works and what it is for
Overview & Background
Voynich MIDI Sequencer is an original monolithic application designed to create MIDI sequences focusing on:
- Rapid experimentation: Step sequencer graphical interface for intuitive MIDI editing
- Algorimetric generation: Randomizer, combination engine, humanizer
- Multitrack sequencing: Visual grill editor with 1-32 + tracks
- Real-time playback: MIDI output via pygame.midi backend
- Flexible management of libraries: Save, load, export MIDI files
Application status (2026- 02): This is legacy reference implementation Voyni MIDI Sequencer. While the upgraded Qt port is in development, this version remains fully functional, stable and serves as the primary source of data for migration processes.
Target uses: Design of drums, melodic phrases, bass lines, harmonic progression, educational sequencing, groove template archiving.
Purpose & Screenplay
Voynich MIDI Sequencer is optimized for:
- Design of drum patterns with swing / groove feel
- Melodic phrases and harmonic progression
- Baseline lines and functional grooves
- Explosive composition with algorithmic generation
- Education sequencing and learning MIDI
- Archiving groove templates and reuse patterns
- Create MIDI mokup / reference track

Troubleshooting
The application does not start
- Check Python 3.8 +
- Install Dependencies:
Without sound
- Tools → MIDI Device Selection → select the available device
- Fallback: FluidSynth (internal synth)
Playback stops
- MIDI buffer overflow: Try to limit the number of feet (16 → 8)
- CPU overload: Close other applications, reduce BPM
- Restart Application
Project not stowed
- Check the disk space
- Check the entry permission
- Delete Corruped Backup File
FAQ
- Q: Can I edit Voynich MIDI Sequencer?
- Yes! It's Open Source. The code is in '/ BONUS _ TOOLS / MIDI _ SUITE / VMS /'. You can clone, formulate, modify and distribute it according to the Bazooka_CZ license.
- Q: How do I export the project to DAW?
- File → Export MIDI → [Save As]. You can open the file '.mid' in any DAW (FL Studio, Ableton, Reaper,...).
- Q: How do I share the standard files?
- The Pattern files are JSON '.data 'format - you can send them by email or via cloud. The recipient loads them through File → Open Pattern.
- Q: What is the maximum length of the sequence?
- In theory, unlimited (limited to RAM only). Practically max. 256 steps per sample, max. 32 feet. MIDI is limited to 16 channels.
- Q: Is Voynich compatible with hardware controllers?
- Not at the moment - just the MIDI output. Hardware input support is planned for future versions.
- Q: Where are my projects stored?
- Default in the working directory. You can change it in File → Preferences → Set project directory.
