Masakazu Isshiki, a mystery writer, lives with his young wife Akiko in Kamakura—a city where ordinary life and the world of spirits, yokai and gods naturally overlap. Their new marriage brings unexpected encounters and strange cases. When Akiko dies in an accident and departs for the underworld, Masakazu sets out after her.

Takashi Yamazaki adapts Ryohei Saigan’s popular manga into an expansive live-action fantasy. The film moves between gentle comedy, detective motifs and spectacular visions of supernatural Kamakura, while keeping a simple story at its heart: two people who refuse to lose one another.

Why it is a personal pick

The film places a fantastic world among familiar streets, homes and the small routines of married life. Kamakura is more than a backdrop for supernatural adventures: its unusual residents belong to an everyday community. The story therefore works as a fairy tale, a mystery and a portrait of a relationship tested by loss.

It adapts Ryohei Saigan’s manga Kamakura Monogatari. The Japanese Film Database (JFDB) records a Japanese release on 9 December 2017 and a running time of 129 minutes. Takashi Yamazaki directed the film, starring Masato Sakai and Mitsuki Takahata.

Fiction and reality

This is a fairy-tale fantasy inspired by Japanese folklore, not a documentary portrait of life in Kamakura. Based on a manga, it uses spirits, yokai and the underworld as elements of an imagined world.
