NACITICAL ANTARCTIDE: NEW SWEDEN, "BASE 211," BONORIES AND OPERATION HIGHJUMP

NACITICAL ANTARCTIDE: NEW SWEDEN, "BASE 211," BONORIES AND OPERATION HIGHJUMP

INTRODUCTION

Antarctica is the perfect place to create legends. It's remote, long badly mapped, extremely inaccessible, and at 20. Centuries of military expeditions have been around her. When a real German expedition from 1938-1939, Nazi submarines that gave up late after the war, and a massive American operation Highjump, is added, a story that easily turns into a secret underground base with the code name Base 211.

The problem is that individual building blocks are different real ones. The German expedition and New Switzerland existed. Indeed, the U-530 and U-977 surrendered in Argentina only after German surrender. Operation Highjump was a truly gigantic American polar operation. But this does not imply the existence of a Nazi city under ice, flying saucers, or secret wars by the US with the Third Reich survivors.

1. Why did the Germans go into the antarctide?

The German Antarctic expedition led by Alfred Ritscher sailed on the Schwabenland in December 1938 and operated in part of Queen Maud's Earth in early 1939. The expedition used two Dornier Wal flying boats, from which large inland areas were photographed.

The main practical context was not the construction of a secret fortress, but economic policy around whaling. Germany was consuming a significant amount of whale fat and the Nazi state wanted to reduce dependence on imports. Antarctica was also an area of overlapping territorial claims and prestigious expeditions.

The Germans have marked the mapped area as Neuschwabenland - New Switzerland. The aircraft were dropped by signs with a swastika as a symbolic element of the claim. German mapping was significant for its time and some geographical names are still used today.

2. WHAT THE EXPEDIT ACTUALLY STOPPED

Here comes the first major problem of legend. The expedition spent only a limited time in the area, working mostly from the ship and flying maps huge territory. There is no documented building logistics chain that matches the construction of a large underground base.

A polar base for hundreds of people would require building materials, energy, food, fuel, transport, radiocommunications and regular supplies. Even more difficult would be to dig out an extensive underground complex in the ice and rock. Nothing like this appears in the preserved documentation of the expedition or in the post-war allied records of the German Navy.

3. THE "BASE 211" OF THE SETTLEMENT

The Base 211 or Station 211 is mainly in the post-war literature on secret Nazi projects and UFO. It often combines itself with the idea of natural sinuses heated by geothermal activity in which the Germans were to build a self-sufficient complex.

However, the very existence of ice-free areas or geothermal phenomena is not proof of the base. Antarctica contains nunasas, dry valleys, volcanic areas and underwater lakes. The geological phenomenon can explain why part of the landscape is unusual, not why a secret military organisation had to operate there.

The historians Colin Summerhayes and Peter Beeching in the Polar Record magazine have been reconstructing the genesis of the story of Hitler's Antarctic base. They compared the time and logistic data of German submarines, expeditions and US operations and showed that key parts of the legend are not compatible with documented ship and submarine movements.

4. U-530 and U-977: ACTUAL LEVEL CAPITULATIONS

Two German submarines became one of the main engines of the legend. U-530 surrendered in the Argentine Mar del Plata in July 1945, U-977 in August. Because they were capitulated weeks to months after the end of the war in Europe, speculation immediately appeared: did they not transport Hitler, Eva Braun, or Nazi gold? They didn't supply the Antarctic base?

But the Allied crew interviews did not provide evidence for the Antarctic route. The reconstruction of voyages, submersible speeds and fuel levels shows that the secret travel scenario for Antarctica and the subsequent transfer to Argentina is not timely.

Late surrender itself is not a mystery of the supernatural type. The submarines operated far from Europe's ports, the leaders could fear Soviet capture or they decided to surrender in a neutral or remote country. An unusual end to the voyage is a historical interest, not an automatic evidence of a secret mission.

5. HITLER IN ANTARKTIDA?

The theory of Hitler's escape to Argentina or Antarctica is also based on the fact that his body was not publicly exposed after the war and the Soviet Union had long published contradictory information. It created an information vacuum.

But modern forensic analyses of dental and jaw remains stored in Russian archives support the identification of Hitler. His very specific dental bridges and prosthetic works were recognized by the war dental records and later studies reexamined this identification. We are therefore dealing with Hitler's end question separately in the article on escape theories; for the Antarctic hypothesis, there is no positive evidence that he has ever gotten out of Berlin.

6. Why is this a big operation?

The U.S. Navy launched Operation Highjump in 1946- 1947. The operation involved thousands of people, ships, planes and extensive research activities. It is its size that has become the main argument of conspiracy: why would the US send such great power to an "empty" Antarctica if there was no enemy?

But the official and logistical context makes sense without Nazi fortress. World War II showed the strategic importance of extreme areas and the beginning of the Cold War increased the need for polar training. The US Navy tested technology, personnel, aerial survey, navigation, logistics, and the possibility of setting up bases in an environment that was analogous to the Arctic.

The operation also had scientific and cartographic objectives. Antarctica was still a huge white spot in the map.

7. ADMIRAL HERD AND "NOT A FRIEND WHO CAN FLY FROM THE FILE TO THE FILE"

Another famous part of the legend is based on Admiral Richard E's postwar newspaper quotes. Byrd. Some Latin American newspapers have warned him that in future war, the United States can attack planes capable of flying from pole to pole.

Sometimes the operative is presented as if Byrd had admitted to the struggle with German flying saucers. But, in the context of the postwar military strategy, this is a much less exotic warning: with the growing range of bombers and the development of polar routes, the oceans have no longer provided the US with old geographical protection. The shortest routes between North America and the Soviet Union have crossed the Arctic.

8. WHY HIGHJUMP SHOUTS EARLY

Legend often claims that the American fleet suffered a overwhelming defeat. The operation has actually experienced accidents and losses. The polar flying was extremely dangerous and the weather was able to destroy the technology without the enemy present.

Early restrictions on some plans can be explained by the conditions, the season, logistical complications and priorities of the Navy. There are no credible records of combat losses caused by Nazi aircraft or unknown technology.

If several US ships and aircraft had actually attacked advanced military power in 1947, thousands of feet would have to be created: combat reports, post-intervention repairs, hospital records, family testimonies, logistical statements, intelligence analyses and reactions from other states. After decades of uncovering, nothing comparable has been created.

9. GERMANY "AIRCRAFT"

Nazi Germany has indeed developed advanced technologies: the V-2 ballistic missile, the Me 262 jet fighters, missiles and experimental aerodynamic structures. It provides a legend with a credible sounding foundation.

However, the post-war stories about Hauneb, Vril and anti-gravity drive disks lack a comparable documentary trail. There were experimental circular and self-winged structures of different countries, but a technological leap from the prototypes of 1945 to the apparatus capable of intercontinental flight and UFO-attributed maneuvers would require fundamental physical and industrial breakthroughs for which there is no documentation.

10. OPERATION OF ARGUS AND NUCLEAR EXPLOSION

Sometimes American nuclear-level tests of Operation Argus from 1958 are involved in the story. These were carried out over the South Atlantic to study the interaction of nuclear explosions with magnetosphere and radiation belts. The detonation sites were thousands of miles from the area of New Switzerland.

The temporal and geographical link to the alleged bombing of the underground base is therefore not in line with the available documents.

11. WHAT COULD BE THE TERRITORY BASE 211 ACTUALLY HURRY

A "strange" satellite photo or a narrative without origin would not be sufficient to confirm it. We need, for example:

  • German construction documentation with verifiable archival provenance;
  • transport and supply records corresponding to the size of the base;
  • geophysical data showing artificial large structures;
  • physical artifacts of unambiguous origin;
  • independent overlapping testimony of participants;
  • Allied intelligence documents that actually locate such installations.

Nothing like this has been publicly documented.

12. WHY THE MICE LIVES

The myth is resilient because it combines many real anomalies: secret regime, technological experiments, a little known continent, submarines with late surrender, large-scale military expeditions, and real postwar secrecy. Each individual fact acts as a catch to which further speculation can be added.

Moreover, the psychologically attractive idea of a secret war with an advanced base is more than the more prosaic story of whale fat, cartography and military logistics in the cold.

CONCLUSION

The Nazi presence in Antarctica is not a myth: the German expedition 1938-1939 really mapped out a part of Queen Maud's Earth and called it Neuschwabenland. The myth is yet another step - the vast permanent Base 211, the postwar Nazi state under the ice and the battle with Operation Highjump.

The most interesting thing about the story is the line between the fact that it's classified and the legend that's built. The Nazis had secret programs. The Allies had secret programs. But it doesn't mean that every later story about the secret program is true.

13. ANTARCTIC TREATY AND PRESENTATION OF "CONTRACTED TERRITORY"

The Antarctic Treaty was signed in 1959 and entered into force in 1961. The Continent has reserved for peaceful purposes, scientific cooperation and has prohibited, inter alia, military maneuvers and weapons tests. The later environmental protocol further strengthened the protection of the environment and mining of mineral materials.

In conspiracy literature, the fact that Antarctica has a special legal regime sometimes interprets itself as a ban on entering places where something is to be hidden. However, the scheme is not an absolute ban on a civilian visit. There are numerous scientific expeditions and commercial tourists to Antarctica, there is a network of bases of dozens of states and research results are internationally published.

This does not mean that every kilometre of the continent is easily accessible. Inland is logistically extreme and protected areas may require special permission. But restrictions can be explained by security, environmental protection and international law without the assumption of secret Nazi territory.

14. SATELLITE Era: IS IT ALREADY POSSIBLE TO KEEP A LOT OF BASIC?

Today's Antarctica is repeatedly photographed by optical and radar satellites. The radar can penetrate snow and ice in certain configurations, and the air geophysics maps the power of the glacier and the structure of the subsoil. Scientists thus discover the entire underwater mountain systems, lakes and canyons.

A small device in a cave would not be automatically visible from a normal satellite image. But a multi-hackilometer self-sufficient base with energy and long-term logistics would create a number of indirect tracks: thermal anomalies, transport, radio traffic, surface changes and material flows. The larger the alleged base and the longer it is to function, the more independent the clues have to explain.

15. WHAT'S PRACTICALLY PRACTICED IN THE HISTORIC CASE

The story of New Switzerland is suitable as a lesson in working with springs. The most effective disinformation often does not come from a completely invented event. It takes a real expedition, a real submarine, and a real military operation, and it creates links between them that are no longer documented.

Therefore, it is good to divide the statement on atomic parts on a similar topic. "Germany has sent an expedition" can be verified. "The expedition mapped Neuschwabenland" can be verified. "Submarines late surrendered in Argentina" can be verified. But the sentence "submarines supply the base with a built expedition and Highjump attacks it" is a new claim that needs its own proof. The trueness of its individual components does not automatically confirm it.
