Vangelis
Vangelis shows film synthesis of emotions: electronics as a psychological layer of the image. The emphasis on performance in real time strengthens the 'vivot' of sound.
Didactic explanation of the relationship of harmony vs sound design: emotional effect often arises from layering and space.
Řecké začátky a Aphrodite’s Child
V šedesátých letech působil ve skupinách The Forminx a Aphrodite’s Child. Album 666 (1972) spojilo progresivní rock s psychedelickými, orchestrálními a experimentálními prvky.
Sólová kariéra a Nemo Studios
Po přesunu do Paříže komponoval hudbu pro dokumentární filmy Frédérica Rossifa a vydával první sólová alba. Roku 1975 se usadil v Londýně, kde vybudoval Nemo Studios. Nahrávky Heaven and Hell, Albedo 0.39, Spiral a China propojují melodický syntezátor, orchestrální gesto a rozsáhlou instrumentální formu.
Filmová hudba a úspěch
Následovaly partitury k Blade Runner, Missing, Antarctica, 1492: Conquest of Paradise a Alexander.
Vesmírné projekty a odkaz
Pomohl přiblížit elektronickou hudbu širokému publiku a ukázal její emocionální i narativní možnosti.

Vangelis demonstrates how synthesis can shape emotion in film, with electronics acting as a psychological layer of the image. His emphasis on real-time performance gives the sound a sense of immediacy.
His work helps explain the relationship between harmony and sound design: emotional impact often comes from laying and space.
Greek beginnings and Aphrodite’s Child
Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou, known as Vangelis, was born in Agria in 1943 and grew up in Athens. Largely self-taught, he performed early and became interested in piano, percussion and electronic instruments. In the 1960s he played with the Forminx and Aphrodite’s Child. Their album 666 (1972) joined progressive rock with psychedelic, orchestral and experimental elements.
Solo career and Nemo Studios
After moving to Paris, Vangelis composed for Frédéric Rossif’s documentary films and released his first solo records. He settled in London in 1975 and built Nemo Studios. Heaven and Hell, Albedo 0.39, Spiral and China combine melodic synthesizers, orchestral gestures and extended instrumental forms. From 1979 to 1986 he worked with singer Jon Anderson as Jon and Vangelis.
Film scores and success
Vangelis became widely known for his soundtracks. His score for Chariots of Fire (1981) won an Academy Award; its electronic theme also reached number one on the US singles chart. Further scores included Blade Runner, Missing, Antarctica, 1492: Conquest of Paradise and Alexander. He also composed for television, theatre, ballet and the series Cosmos.
Space projects and legacy
Later work included projects connected with NASA and the European Space Agency, including the album Rosetta. His style combines broad melodies, layered keyboards, orchestral colours and improvisation. He often treated synthesizers as an orchestra rather than simply as rhythmic accompaniment. Vangelis died in Paris in 2022. He helped bring electronic music to a broad audience and showed its emotional and narrative possibilities.
